MANIFESTO OF THE LONDON HISTORY OF SCIENCE SOCIETY

Having studied the history of science and medicine, and wishing to maintain an active interest in this fascinating subject, we, the undersigned, determine to establish a History of Science Society in London. This Society shall exist under the following three guiding principles:

  • Firstly, we shall have in common an interest in the History of Science and Medicine, from the inception of enquiry about the universe in classical antiquity, to the most recent contemporary scientific beliefs.
  • Secondly, we shall regard all scientific thinking within its political, historical, geographical and economic context, avoiding the temptation to view all history with reference to the present.
  • Thirdly, we shall foster and encourage debate and discussion, whilst always maintaining the spirit of friendship, enquiry, and enthusiasm that the Society exists to promote and has at its centre.

The material aims of the society shall be to promote interest in the History of Science, through events and activities; to support exhibitions and events on this subject; and to provide members with:

  • Access to special group events organised by the Society
  • A newsletter containing public events of interest in London, and articles or essays by the members of the Society
  • A forum in which to discuss History of Science
  • Introduction of like-minded individuals to the Society.

The Constitution shall lay out the rules governing the operation, structure and membership of the Society.

Formed this 22nd day of October in the year 2006.

Julia Flint, President
Nick Seeber, Chairman
